Visiting Australia; Smokers not welcome

Starting 1st September 2012 arriving passenger are only permitted duty free 2 packets of cigarettes or 50 gram tobacco. Considering the high cost of tobacco products locally where just one packet of cigarettes could cost around $ 20.– and cigars are sold at an exorbitant high price smokers may consider to “give em a miss” and choose another holiday destination.

Only Singapore seems to have a similar rule while most other countries do permit arriving passengers an allowance of 1 or 2 cartons of cigarettes e.g. 10-20 packs. In some countries tobacco products are sold so cheap that it is not even worthwhile to bring any along.

In the Philippines a packet of “known brand” cigarettes cost less the 50 cent and a wide range of high quality cigars are available at a low cost.
